In order to be competitive and to dominate the market, the industry of television enterprise is undergoing business reorganization. The infrastructure of the whole TV industry has been drastically changed.
This thesis is a part of the ongoing research project, “A Study on the Successful Reorganization of Taiwanese Media Business,” which is under the supervision of Dr. J. H. Yang, Dean of School of Communications, Ming Chuan University. A case study was carried out in one of the largest Taiwanese TV stations, Taiwan Television Station (TTV). We evaluate the initiatives of their reorganization plans, their practices and the final results.
A comprehensive survey was conducted by interviewing with executives of several leading TV stations, managers of TTV and employees of TTV. There are a total of 331 questionnaires, including 151 from the TV station executives, 15 from TTV managers and 165 from TTV employees.
Our analysis indicates that the fast development of “Digital Telecommunication Technology” is forcing the TV industry to reorganize their business infrastructure. Meanwhile, the most important factor to succeed in business reorganization is the commitment from the top executives. The case study on TTV shows that TTV managers and employees all agree that communication between management and employees is the key to succeed in business reorganization. However, TTV’s management did not communicate effectively with their employees.
Although a committed management can lead to successful business reorganization, frequent turnover of management caused by politics could not be persistent in reorganizing the business structure. Hence, the TTV management failed to implement their reorganization plans as originally planned even though the most important factor to have successful business reorganization is supposed to be “a dedicated management”.
