Most of rivers in Taiwan are short and quiet steep. It is always tough to describe the relation of discharge and correspondent water level by the concept of determined models. This paper use of time serious theory to describe the nonlinear relationship between the discharge and water level of the Chou-shui River. The exponential smoothing function could simulate the time series variation of water level by adjusting the smoothing factor. One of the advantage of the exponential smoothing is that only one parameter has to be selected. In this study, the exponential smoothing model (ESM) is used to construction a discharge rating curve of the Cho-shui River at the Chang-yun Bridge.
