Although hospital information system (HIS), which integrates picture archiving and communication system (PACS), nursing information system (NIS) and laboratory information system (LIS), has been widely implemented in most large-scaled hospitals and has greatly improved their operation efficiency, some middle- or small-scaled hospitals still rely on systems with manual operation or semi-automated operation because of their budget deficiency. In this thesis we present a preliminary result of a simple LIS implementation for a middle-scaled hospital where the laboratory reports were originally input to the HIS manually. Serial ports of three blood test instruments were used to connect to an acquisition computer and for acquiring the test reports, which were then transferred to the HIS for integration with the patient records. The results show that the operation time is significantly reduced. This work has constructed a prototype which is valuable for later system expansion and LIS software development. Future works will keep working on (1) connecting other equipment, including urine and biochemistry examination instruments, to the system and expanding the scale to cover all the instruments; (2) designing related LIS software for greatly promote the laboratory efficiency in the hospital.
