To enhance the excitement of competition, The International Softball Federation renewed some rules in 2001. Among these modifications, the distance between pitcher and home base increased from 12.19m up to 13.11m, and the homerun distance increased from 60.96m up to 67.06m. The National Softball Federation started to adopt the new rules in 2002. To investigate the effects of these new rules toward offense and defense in competitions, the 79 old rule game records of 2001 were compared with the 114 new rule game records of 2002-2003. One-Way ANOVA was applied. Significance α level was set at 0.05. The following results were found:
1. New rule significantly increased Score, Batting Average, Three Base Hits, Home Run, Total Bases On Safe Hits, Stolen Bases, Caught Stealing offense records, but significantly decreased record in Runs Batted In, Two Base Hits, and Strike Out.
2. No significant differences (P>.05) were found between new
and old rules in Base On Balls, Hit By Pitched, One Base Hit, On Base Percentage offense records.
3. There was a significant increase for new rule in Fault of
Fielding record, but significant decrease found in Put Out
and Defensive Rate.
4. No significant differences (P>.05) between new and old
game record in Assist Of Fielding record.
5. Due to pitcher’s distance change, an increase of 7.5% in
Pitcher’s Defensive Rate was found in new rule.
