People have many places to choose from, such as parks, state own and private recreation areas, scenic areas. Forest recreation area has been a popular choice recently. . In order to bring back visitors’ good old memory of the Giant tree (found in 1920, toppled in 1997), Forestry Bureau started planning to build the plank road around the giant trees group in 1997. There are 36 giant trees along the plank road. When we think about all the goods and services men kind benefit from woods, the contribution of non-woods will also be recognized and it is not less than woods themselves. As many environmental resources, forest’s non-woods function has the character of public goods. Since there is not a tangible market dealing public goods, there won’t be a market value for it. This causes more complexity and difficulty in evaluating forest’s non-market value than that of woods with tangible market value. Contingent Valuation Method, which is non-market evaluation approach, has caused lots of attention as well as controversy in recent years. Different from some others evaluation approach, which observe the tangible markets and decide the value indirectly, the Contingent Valuation Method tries to find out people’s preference and evaluation to certain kind of non-market goods, then decide its value. The job will be done by using questionnare which contain several hypothetical questions or marketing experiments. CVM can be divided into four categories according to the difference of inquiry methods, which are open method, bidding method, added value method and dichotomy method. In order to protect the 36 giant trees in Alishan Forest Recreation Area and prevent the trees resources from deteriorating, this study the retrieved valid samples of the research that started to interview form Ang. 2002 to June 2003 are 1012 As we alculate them the existence value WTP of the open method is 137 dollars/each person ,and the bequest value WTP of the open method is 411 dollars/each person ;the existence value WTP of the added value method is 166 dollars/each person and bequest value WTP of the added value method is 309 dollars/each person .
