A language often is made up of three elements: sounds, words and phrases and sentences. The learning of words and phrases has a significant place in the language field. What words and phrases needs to be taught in the mother tongue training program? The survey of “frequently used words and phrases” is one of the most fundamental and necessary tasks in the building of language database. Writer of the thesis conducted a field study for the survey and research of frequently used words and phrases in the Taiwanese dialect, and found 9,264 frequently used words and phrases. In addition to analysis and research on syntactical functions, morphological features, categorical terms, and word formation for the most frequently used 1,075 words, the writer also makes a study comparison between Taichung County’s Dajia Township, and Changhua County’s Hsiushui Township to better understand the distribution and application of frequently used Taiwanese words and phrases as a basis for orientation in compiling teaching materials for dialect education. The first chapter is the preface, which deals with motives and objectives, geographical makeup and history of Tianjhong Township, document research, the scope and limits of this study, research approach and steps. The second chapter, “An inquisition into frequently used words and phrases in Taiwanese dialect at Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township,” expounds the scope, approach, course of study, phonetic system, word choice and interviews when conducting the field study for the thesis. The third chapter, “The establishment of a frequently used words and phrases database of Taiwanese dialect for Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township,” details the principles and standards on which the establishment of a frequently used words and phrases database would be built, and gives a glossary of the thesis’s databank. The fourth chapter, “A probe into syntactical functions of frequently used words and phrases in Taiwanese dialect at Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township,” delves into classification approach of syntactical functions, and classifies those 1,075 words according to their syntactical functions. A comparison is made for such between Dajia and Hsiushui Townships. The fifth chapter, “A study on the categorical terms of frequently used words and phrases in Taiwanese dialect at Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township,” the author details the classification of various terms, categorizing those 1,075 words frequently used in Tianjhong Township according to their categories; a comparative research is made for Dajia and Hsiushui Townships. The sixth chapter, “A study on the word-formation of frequently used words and phrases of Taiwanese dialect in Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township,” illustrates the classification of word-formation, that sorts out the most frequently used 1,075 words of Tianjhong Township according to word-formation. A comparison is made between Dajia and Hsiushui Townships. The seventh chapter, “Conclusion and other thoughts,” provides a summary on the course of study, sums up research results, gives a self-evaluation, and gives suggestions on the analysis. The postscript of this text includes: 1. a list of reference books. 2. a scoring table of frequently used words in Taiwanese dialect of Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township, frequency in which the words and phrases appear. 3. a list of syntactical functions, categorical terms and wordbuilding of the frequently used words in Taiwanese at Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township. 4. a scoring table of frequently used words among various age groups in Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township. 5. a table of categorical terms and wordbuilding of frequently used words and phrases and syntactical functions of Taiwanese dialect in Changhua County’s Hsiushui Township. 6. a table of syntactical functions, categorical terms and wordbuilding of frequently used terms and phrases of Taiwanese dialect at Taichung County’s Dajia Township. 7. The first 1000 vocabulary that are used in Dajia, Tianjhong, and Hsiushui Townships. 8. A research handbook featuring frequently used vocabulary in Taiwanese in Changhua County’s Tianjhong Township.
