The purpose of this research is to design a set of the course curriculum by using “The Journey to the West” as an alternative reading along with the act of shadow play as an example of helping the students to understand this novel. Thus, the results of this research can have a future benefit for the people of teaching fields to practice the same technique in their classroom. After attending the course that we have designed, we hope the subjects can have great interests on reading Chinese classical novels. Also, we hope this can increase the relationship between teachers and students. The subjects of this study are from Hsin-Ju Hsi-Hsi Elementary School (anonym), the sixth grade students of Lively Class (anonym), where the researcher is teaching. The techniques that are used in this study are observation, questionnaire, and interview. The tools that are used to gather data are questionnaire sheet, video/tape recording, research journal, learning journal, and compositions written by the students. Using the data that are collected, along with the research process, the research curriculum, and the research subjects, as a tri-dimensional exploratory to the study. The results of this research are as following: 1. The research course curriculum of “The Journey to the West” as an alternative reading along with shadow play is a set of concrete and feasible course. 2. In practicing the “The Journey to the West” as an alternative reading along with the shadow play, the subjects have more understandings of this novel. It can also increase the abilities of recomposing scripts, making Muppets, and writing compositions. 3.
