With his artistic talent and effort, he established a special style of his own. The inspiration of his artistic creations came from primitive art. He gained his creative energy from primitive art and transformed it into horizontal paintings. Thus he created simple but powerful primitive feelings in his paintings. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of primitive patterns on Max Chiwei Liu’s artwork. This study has been divided into three parts: Part 1. To discuss the life and background of Chiwei Liu in order to understand the change of his painting style. Part 2. To discuss the influence of primitive art on Chiwei Liu’s concept. Part 3. To discuss the influence of primitive patterns on the contents and creation of Chiwei Liu’s artwork by analyzing Liu’s nine related paintings. The research methods used in this study included historical research method, literature analysis, formalistic research method, comparative analysis, autobiography research method and documentary analysis. The life of Chiwei Liu was divided into six periods and the influences of primitive patterns on the concept and contents of his paintings were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows. Part 1. The life of Chiwei Liu Liu’s life can be divided into six periods. In the first period, 1912~1936, he spent his adolescent life studying in Japan. In the second period, 1937~1945, he returned to China to teach at a university. In the third period, 1946~1946, he came to Taiwan to work and started painting. In the fourth period, 1965~1967, he joined the war in Vietnam and has his first contact with ancient cultures in Southeast Asia. In the fifth period, 1968~1971, his personal style was formed and he became well-known in art field. In the sixth period, 1972~2002, he was a dedicated teacher, anthropologist, environmentalist, and he devoted himself to primitive art studies. Part 2. The influence of primitive art on his concept of creation By analyzing Liu’s artwork, most his paintings contain the following common characteristics. . 1. Symmetry and balance 2.Expressionism and symbolic 3. Primitive words and signs. 4. Horizontal and fluoroscopy. 5. Simplified, transformed and twisted 6. Primary colors This shows that primitive art had a profound influence on Chiwei Liu. Part 3. The influence of primitive pattern on the materials in Liu’s paintings By direct comparison to primitive paintings, the similar materials observed in Liu’s paintings can be categorized into the following seven objects including birds, snakes, elves, wizards, portraits, sexual admiration and primitive patterns.
