To understand its ecological quality, a better way is to make a holistic assessment of the basin by ecological integrity. This research tended to use plants as the assessing basis of ecological integrity . To analyze the terrestrial ecology, three indices: taxa richness, coverage of alien dominant sSpecies, and solar radiation were established for biological integrity. Meanwhile, indices of Plant Succession Stages and Vertical Structure were established habitatquality. Criteria were designed for assessing these 5 indices. The three indices for biological integrity were summed up as Vegetation Indices of Biological Integrity (VIBI). Two indices of habitant quantity were summed up to make Habitat Quality Index (HQI). The scores of VIBI and HQI together finally made Index of Terrestrial Ecological Integrity (ITEI). To examine the operation and practicability of the designed assessing criteria of eEcological integrity, the Basin of Ma-Ling-Keng Stream along Keelung River was chosen as research area. It was divided into 524 research blocks (with 200m ×200 m each). Each block was investigated with the assessing criteria. Data collected was then analyzed with Geographic Information System (GIS) in order to show the distribution of the ecological quality in the Basin of Ma-Ling-Keng Stream, and compare with the quality level classified by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The representativeness of NDVI to ecological integrity was also explored. ecological integrity, Through the application of the assessing criteria in of Ma-Ling-Keng Stream basin, proved NDVI an over estimation of for land ecological quality. It also showed that assessing ecological integrity could better reflects the real situation of ecological quality in the basin. The study revealed that establishing an assessment criteria for ecological integrity has tangible contribution to the land planning and management of the basin.
