Abstract
In recent years, with more and more overseas Chinese tennis players yielding brilliant results in international matches and domestic increasing concern for leisure activities, the sport tennis is getting popular. However, there is not much relevant historical research. This research aims to carry out a systematic and comprehensive discussion about the development of tennis in Taiwan.
The research is an in-depth analysis on how tennis has developed in schools and in society and how domestic activities interact with the international community. The research uses “historical research” method as well as “documental analysis” method to discuss the development of tennis in Taiwan.
1. In school system, tennis is developed from higher education to basic education.
Tennis has been incorporated into the high school’s PE standards since 1962 and into the elementary school’s PE standards in 1993. The setup of the PE special class also begins from high schools and then develops in elementary schools. Interscholastic tennis matches also begin between high schools and then develops between elementary schools. Generally speaking, the development of tennis in elementary schools is the slowest in the school system.
2. In society, tennis is developed from soft tennis to hard tennis.
Influenced by the popularity of soft tennis during Japanese colonial period, the general public still preferred soft tennis after the island was restored from Japanese colonialism. With the country’s gaining membership to ITF (International Tennis Federation) in 1970 and the media’s coverage on tennis, hard tennis began to become popular. More and more people who had once been engaged in soft tennis began to play hard tennis, leading to a rise in the popularity of hard tennis.
3. In international matches, the performance of female players is more brilliant than that of male players.
After Japanese colonial period, Lui Hsiangku won two gold medals in tennis matches at Asia Games. Regarding teenager matches, Wang Szuting became the country’s first female singles champion at formal international matches. In 1998, national delegation won women’s team gold medal at Asia Games 1998. In all, the performance of female players is more brilliant than that of male players.
In conclusion, the development of tennis in high schools is earlier than that in elementary schools. Since soft tennis has laid the foundation for tennis development, hard tennis becomes popular in Taiwan and there are quite many people engaging in such sport. Regarding international matches, the performance of female players is better than that of male players.
