Summary:碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 兒童文學研究所 === 92 === Contemporary picture storybook writers adopt metafictive ways of writing in order to make a breakthrough in writing. Such methods have brought a new horizon to both adult and child readers. Through discussions of this kind of writing brings forth its artistry, as well as how such works should be interpreted, so the writers’ motives can be reached. The backbone of this writing is based on theories of metafiction. Discussions and analyses of picture books are achieved through categorizing the narrative devices of metafiction. There are six chapters in this research. The contents are as follows. Chapter One Introduction; this chapter states the motives, purpose, questions and related articles. Chapter Two The definition and characteristics of picture storybooks. The focus of this chapter is to find suitable definition for “picture storybooks.” Pictures and texts both being part of the narration is emphasized. Deft and multi-linear narrative is also demonstrated. Chapter Three The metafictive devices in metafiction and picture storybooks. This chapter provides a brief definition, history, form and characteristics of metafiction , which reflects people’s worldview and thinking in the post-Second War. The characteristics of metafictive narrative are also demonstrated to outline the metafictive devices in picture storybooks. Chapter Four The self conscious writing in picture storybooks. That some picture storybooks show the self conscious writing, a metafictive device, in the language, the characters and plots is discussed in this chapter. Chapter Five Parodies in picture storybooks. Three categories of parody are provided: fairytale parody, non-literature parody and imagery art parody, and through which demonstrates this metafictive device in picture storybooks. Chapter Six Conclusion and suggestions. An analysis of the strength and weakness of picture books which adopt metafictive devices are demonstrated in this chapter as conclusion. Suggestions to the research of picture storybooks in the future are also provided in this final chapter.
