Cell growth and motility are very important in the development of various types of cells. They are fundamental activities of cell to show normal physical functions. Several systems that focus on molecular level, including signal transduction, gene regulation and biochemical pathway, had been well studied to answer the relative question. However, the main question, the mechanism that how cell move and growth, is not well understood.
In this study, we tried to examine the growth and motility of cell under the action of impressed forces. Two types of forces system including laser tweezers and laminar flow chamber were built to demonstrate how cell responses to these influences. The results showed that the growth and retraction of neuron(PC-12) could be induced by introducing the IR laser beam on different parts of the cell. The laser inducing the actin polymerization may be the reason for these results. By using flow chamber that introduce shear stress to the cell, we can change the moving direction of the Dictyostelium without changing the moving speed. When comparing the experimental results with Brownian ratchet model and several theoretical models about the growth and motility of the cell, a better understanding about the cell’s development processes has been accomplished.
