The sampled grating lasers use sampled gratings of different periods and a shift layer to achieve lasing at the first-order reflection peak. With this structure, a simple fabrication procedure as well as high yield could be achieved without using complex e-beam lithography for making multiperiod gratings. Our numerical analysis is based on the transfer matrix method and the coupled mode theory. The effects of grating strength and mirror coating are analyzed in order to improve single-mode yield and threshold gain performance for two-section DFB lasers and two-section SGDFB lasers. A SGDFB laser array with 10nm wavelength spacing was fabricated and demonstrated. The individual laser could be tuned over wide wavelength range by adjusting the injection current.
