However “a fiber containing only one channel ” is still widespread in traditional fiber networks in Taiwan. If the above-mentioned traditional fiber networks can be replaced by the WDM systems, overall system performance would be drastically upgraded as expected. Considering the effects of four-wave mixing (FWM) resulting from fiber-index nonlinearity, particularly at the optical window of 1310 nm, this work has investigated systematic analyses for four-channel and eight-channel, with equal and unequal channel spacings, by using 35 Km-long standard (uncompensated) single-mode fibers. Based upon our simulated results, it was found that the multi-channel optical transmissions with unequal channel spacings, the bit-error rate (BER) can be improved by two order in magnitude (from 10-8 to 10-10) and the quality factor can be improved by 14.4% (form 5.37 to 6.143), compared to the systems with equal channel spacing. We therefore suggest that WDM signal transmissions with unequal channel spacings have superior system performance of reducing FWM effects to those using equal channel spacing when they are operating in nonlinear-index regime.
