First, a radio on multimode fiber (MMF) system based on 1.55 μm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and external light injection technique is proposed and demonstrated. Low error vector magnitude (EVM;≦3.5%), third order intermodulation distortion to carrier ratio (IMD3/C;-60 dBc) and bit error rate (BER;10-9) values were obtained in our proposed radio on MMF systems. Using VCSELs as optical sources in radio on MMF systems are very attractive, as they are relatively simple to fabricate and potentially low cost. Such a proposed radio on MMF system is suitable for the short-haul microwave optical link. Second, a radio-on-fiber (ROF) transport system employing electroabsorption modulator (EAM) low bias voltage and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) light injection technique to improve systems’ performance is proposed and demonstrated. Good performances third order intermodulation distortion to carrier ratio (IMD3/C;-72dBc) and spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR;120 dB‧Hz4/5) were obtained in our proposed system over an-80 km single-mode finer (SMF) transport. Our proposed ROF transport systems can transmit intelligence transport systems (ITS) microwave signals with a SFDR> 112 dB-Hz4/5.
