A total of 1089 students in 5th and 6th grade were selected at random as the subjects of this study. The investigation was achieved by the questionnaire of “The elementary school students’ motivation of participating the after school exercise and perceived barriers to exercise in Taipei City”. The data which obtained by investigations of this research were analyzed by statistical methods including item analysis, factor analysis, descriptive statistics, independence t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s Method ,Pearson Product-Moment correlation. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1.The participating motivations of this study are: skill development, self-challenge, sports enjoyment, peer- relationship, team atmosphere and health-related Fitness. 2.The perceived barriers to exercise of this study are: lack of skills, lack of fun, lack of money, lack of support, lack of time, lack of chance. 3.We can conclude that there were significant differences of the variable items of sex, grade, body mass index(BMI), level of education of father, participating the exercise delegation and exercise club by analyzing the different population statistic index of the students’ motivation to participate the after school exercise. 4.Similarly, the significant differences of the variable items of sex, grade, occupation of mother, participating the exercise delegation and exercise club by analyzing the different population statistic index of the students’ barriers of perception and exercise to participate the after school exercise. 5.The elementary school students that are with regular exercise or not result in the remarkable difference of the variable items of skill development, self challenge and peer- relationship relationship by analyzing the after school exercise participating motivations. 6.The elementary school students that are with regular exercise or not result in the significant difference of the variable items of six factors by analyzing the perceived barriers to exercise. 7.The participating motivations and perceived barriers to exercise of this study reveal a significant negative correlation.
