The subjects under analysis are picture books that won awards for children’s literature in the last ten years and picture books that deal with death concept in themes or illustrations chosen from the publisher’s catalogs. The method of Content Analysis is adopted to form the table of the concept of death, which divided into three parts: the picture books in Taiwanese, the picture books of European and American countries, and the difference between the picture books in Taiwanese and the European and American countries. According to the three major death concepts, the Physical death concept, the Metaphysical death concept and the Psychological and Cultural death concept, each part were discussed. The study has the following primary findings: 1. Picture books in Taiwanese: Among the picture books in Taiwanese, the frequency of the eight death concepts has great difference. l Under the Physical death concepts: “Causality” is the major idea in the themes of the picture books. “Nonfuncionality” is the major idea among the illustration in the picture books. l Under the Metaphysical death concept: “Nocorporeal continuation” and “personification” are both the first and the second major ideas of themes and the illustration of the picture books. l Under the Psychological and Cultural death concept: “Attitude toward death” and “death rites and customs” are the first and the second major ideas in the themes of the picture books. “Death rites and customs” and “Attitude toward death” are the first and the second major ideas in the illustration of the picture books. 2. Picture books in European and American countries: Among the picture books in Taiwanese, the frequency of the eight death concepts has great difference. l Under the Physical death concepts: “Causality” is the major idea in the themes of the picture books. “Nonfuncionality” is the major idea among the illustration in the picture books. l Under the Metaphysical death concept: “Nocorporeal continuation” and “Personification” are both the first and the second major ideas of themes and the illustration of the picture books. l Under the Psychological and Cultural death concept: “Attitude toward death” and “Death rites and customs” are both the first and the second major ideas of themes and the illustration of the picture books. 3. The difference between European and American picture books and Taiwanese picture books in themess and illustration. l In themes: The frequency of the three death concepts, the Physical death concept, the Metaphysical death concept and the Psychological and Cultural death concept, are similar in Taiwanese and the European and American countries’ picture books. l In illustration: The frequency of the Physical death concept and the Metaphysical death concept are different in Taiwanese and the European and American countries’ picture books. But the frequency of the Psychological and Cultural death concept is similar in Taiwanese and the European and American countries’ picture books. 4. The variety shows in the analysis of each death concept categories. We present the result of this analysis to teachers, authors, illustrators, publishers and the future studies for their references.
