Moreover, Hsingchuang, Tucheng, Lucho, Sungshan and Hsinyi lines are under planning. Because Taipei rail transit systems are convenient, comfortable, safe, and economic, they have widely used for Taipei metropolitan commuters now and will be in the future. Therefore, the public and academic have concerned on the safety of a dc rail transit system. For passenger stations, bulk supply substations, and traction supply substations, good equipment grounding and system grounding are one of major factors to human safety and equipment protection. A good grounding system can provide a path for short circuit currents to flow into earth when a fault occurs. This will ensure human safety and equipment protection. The main purpose of this thesis is to assess safety of grounding systems in Bulk Supply Substation (BSS) and Traction Supply Substation (TSS) for Taipei Rail Transit Systems (TRTS) by computing criteria of touch and step voltages, actual mesh and step voltages, the tolerable shock duration and the ground resistance of 50kg and 70kg person. In addition, the power cable of current division factor was calculated using Endrenyi’s method. Safety assessment of BSS and TSS substations is compared to the TRTS designed value again. This thesis will use the bulk supply substation and traction supply substation of Chungho line as an example for grounding safety assessment.
