The Raman crosstalk is periodically compensated with a compensator placed at the middle of a compensation period. The compensator over compensates the Raman crosstalk of the WDM signal channels so that signal powers at the end of the compensation period are restored. The required gain spectrum of the compensator is first obtained by an iteration method. Then a linear searching method is further applied to optimize the gain spectrum. It is found that such a compensation method has the advantage of decreasing the WDM signal power excursion due to Raman crosstalk along the transmission links. Thus the impairment effect introduced by Raman crosstalk can be reduced. Index Words: optical communication, wavelength division multiplexing, Raman crosstalk.
