Description
Summary:碩士 === 逢甲大學 === 化學工程學所 === 93 === Polymer microspheres could be used in paintings, surface furnishing of paper, adhesives, additives of plastics, construction materials, etc.. In recent years, microspheres have been further applied to medical treatment, medicine, and biochemistry owing to technonolgy advancement. Synthesis of hollow microspheres requires either hard or soft templates. The former refers to a solid and the latter, a liquid or gas. The thesis reports the syntheses of hollow poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene microspheres by bubbled micelles. Firstly, monomers and oil are mixed and added separately into surfactant solutions of 0.5, 1.5, 4.0, and 12.0 CMC to let them diffuse into the micelles and form a microemulsion. After a while the initiator is added to start polymerizaiton at 50, 60, and 75℃ for 4 hours. The adsolubilized oil would then evaporate to form bubbled micelles due to heating. After polymerization, the products are examined under TEM, SEM, and DLS to characterize the particle size and morphologies. The thesis discusses whether heating could cause monomer polymerization as well as oil evaporation, thus leading to hollow structures inside the formed particles. Comparisons of particles size distribution prepared at different CMC’s and temperatures are also made.
