Globalization and liberalization have been major international economic trends, and the patterns of economy and trade are changing. The Customs must modify its clearance system, and introduce advanced systems and new ideas in order to achieve its dual goals of “facilitating trade” and “enforcing the laws.”
In order to improve the Customs clearance procedures, the R.O.C. Customs has been proactive in studying international standards and the systems of advanced nations. The most prominent one is the WCO Kyoto Convention, a short name for “International Convention on the Simplification and Harmonization of Customs Procedures”, which is a model standard of Customs procedures. However, very little research attention has so far been paid to the translation of Customs terms in Taiwan. Thus, this thesis discusses the principles of formation of English Customs terms and the methods and principles of their translation into Chinese, based on the theory of terminology that is specified in Chapter 2 and taking the text of the WCO Kyoto Convention as the main research material.
This thesis is divided into five chapters and attached with an appendix providing a glossary of major English Customs terms, which are categorized by the methods of translation.
Chapter 1: Describing the motivation and goal of this thesis, the current situation of terminology translation in Taiwan, the method and scope of this research.
Chapter 2: Dedicating to the introduction of the theory of terminology, especially the three main constituents: concept, definition and term.
Chapter 3: Looking into the formation of English Customs terms, the terminological equivalence and translation.
Chapter 4: Case study on the translation of Customs terms and texts.
Chapter 5: Presenting conclusions of this research and suggestions for future studies of the translation of Customs terms
Appendix: Providing a glossary of major Customs terms that is categorized by translation techniques.
