The capacity of the battery is estimated to judge in order to make the constant current or make the constant voltage and charge the battery by a flyback converter structure. An integral plus proportional controller is employed to reduce the effects of the battery charger and exercise bike voltage variation, and to provide a fast tracking of command change without overshoot, lengthening the life-span of the battery and saving the time of charging. Cooperating with the demand of the exercise bike, an integrated ampere-hour (AH) method is developed to estimate the residual capacity of the battery where the initial capacity estimation is based on the electromotive force method and interpolation method. The accuracy of the estimation has been verified in experimental tests.
