As medical system is closely related to public health and safety, no error is allowed in the operation process. Thus, if we could make good use of the power of information technology, we could collect and share the medical information promptly in a proper and safe way within the shortest time to prevent medical errors from happening. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a sort of advanced wireless identity technology which links the information to computer network via the microchip “tagged” on the object for identifying, tracing, and confirming the condition and location of the object. In Taiwan, during the period of SARS, the property of RFID was applied for conducting the in-hospital infection control of the medical staff and patients. In recent years, the said technology has also been gradually applied to the operation of other departments in the hospital, such as drug counterfeit, medical record management, assess tracking and etc. The existing medical care comprises the three factors of complicated processes, technology, and operator interaction, and numerous unpredictable risks are covered within it. The purpose of this study is on exploring the dimensions of the medical errors, important index, and the causes of medical errors in Taiwan and abroad. By means of the five steps of BPMA and IDEF 0 modeling methodology to build a patient safety centered, RFID based, patient care process improvement system.
