It can have different material composition such as carbon steel, chrome steel, and stainless steel. Steel ball has been widely used in precision bearing, conveyer, bicycle, automotive parts, caster, hardware, toy, hand tool, linear motion guide, ball screw, Chemical, food processing, and many other products. The quality of steel ball is very important especially when used in high precision required machines. Therefore, the quality of steel ball needs to be exactly controlled. Among all items of quality required, the surface of steel ball is the most difficult part to inspect. A steel ball automatic inspection machine which is consisted of laser beam, eddy current and driving mechanism has been used widely. At this moment, automatic inspection machines for high grade steel ball all are made by foreign countries. Therefore, the technique for steel ball inspection is needed to develop. In this research, inspection by optical method is chosen. Fixed laser beam device and center position fixed steel balls are selected as the structure of inspection machine. Then the steel ball driving mechanism has been analyzed in this research. It requires that the driving mechanism can drive steel ball to rotate in certain pattern so that whole ball surface can pass through optical sensor. According to the motion of steel ball relative to optical sensor, a suitable driving mechanism is designed.
