We propose a novel replica management scheme, called Multicast-based Region Grid, which utilizes IP multicast to reduce the redundant replica transmission. The basic concept of Multicast-based Region Grid is that the grid sites with similar bandwidth gather into a region. When a replica is required, it queries the other replicas in its own region. Otherwise, it queries the others across regions. Besides, most presented replica is read-only. Although read-only replica is easier to be accessed, it is not flexible enough. Two types of replicas:master replicas and secondary replicas are in our thesis. We use a writable-replica, called master replica to make our Multicast-based Region Grid more reliable. It is responsible for the modification and propagates the latest replica to the other master replicas and secondary replicas. Besides, a tree-based structure is flexible when accessing a replica. The way of building a tree is based on the weight. The closer to the root, the site of larger weight locates. Meanwhile, we also consider tree maintenance and coherence maintenance to make our Multicast-based Region Grid more adaptable for such changeable data grids.
