to Identify Fifth Graders’ Misconception about the Three Phases of Water

Abstract
This study intends to identify fifth graders’ misconception about the three phases of water using science writing. The major concepts regarding the three phases of water includes “the evaporation and condensation of water”, “the formation of rain, snow, cloud, fog, dew and frost” and “the experiment about three phases of water”.
This study is a qualitative study. Researcher is the instructor. Researcher subjects are a class of 31 fifth graders of Tauyuan County. Students finished three working sheets right after each science instruction namely “guided science writing activity”, “question-answer science writing activity” and “experimental science writing activity”. Researcher read through students’ writing and formed categories of concepts regarding the three phases of water. Researcher and the other judge then examined independently students’ concept about water in accordance with the categories to determine if students’ concepts are misconceptions. The inter-rater reliability for the three working sheet are 96.9%, 96.1% and 96.7%.
The results of this study indicate that fifth graders do have misconceptions about the three phases of water and such results confirm what former studies in literature have found. However, this study has also found that science writing activities might have the power of revealing students’ more thought about water. Accordingly, researchers and teachers may get to know more about students’ misconceptions via science writing activities.More research results and recommendation will be discussed in detail in thesis.
