The study focused on volumes 1-12 of the Chinese language textbooks. The objects for the analysis of content were from the Chinese language textbooks published by the following four book companies: Jen-Lin, Nan-Yi, Kang-Hsuan and Han-Lin. The data were collected from the literature analysis to categorize the narratives in the textbooks. The categories of narratives included myths, fables, stories, fairy tales and novels. Then the researcher used the content analysis to analyze the proportion of the narratives, the categories of the narratives, the appropriateness of the arrangement of the narratives, and the theme and the structure of the narratives. The conclusions drawn from the findings of the study were as follows: 1. The highest proportion of the narratives was Jen-Lin; Nan-Yi and Kang-Hsuan were less; and Han-Lin was the least. 2. The highest quantity and proportion of the narratives were stories; fables and fairy tales were less; myths were very few; and no novels were included. 3. The arrangement of the narratives was appropriate to the needs of the children’s reading development. 4. There were fewer transitions on the plots of the narratives. Finally, suggestions for the editors of the textbooks and further research were recommended.
