These include how they are defined, how they are formed, which languages they are translated from, how they are categorized, how they interact with the social and cultural contexts in Taiwan, and finally whether loanwords should be prescribed. Aside from exploring both the static and the dynamic sides of new Mandarin loanwords, this thesis also aims at making predictions on how loanwords will develop in Taiwan. It is hoped that through the effort of this thesis the study of loanwords can draw its due attention of more people in Taiwan, and further motivate timely collection of loanwords. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One, Introduction, includes a general statement of the motivations and objectives of this thesis and the definition of loanwords. Chapter Two, Literature Review, briefly describes the historical periods of Mandarin loanwords and the characteristics of each period, and also presents some relevant loanword studies and discourses. Chapter Three, Analysis Framework of Loanwords, describes the research methodology of this thesis and how loanwords are categorized by their morphological structures. Chapter Four is Analysis of New Mandarin Loanwords in Taiwan, which actively observes through their different categories the new loanwords I have collected and explores the development and the interaction with Taiwan’s social and cultural contexts of these new Mandarin loanwords over the past twenty three years. Chapter Five, Conclusion, consists of the comprehensive evaluation of my study of new loanwords, the examination of the fulfillment of my research objectives, and finally reflections of and comments on this study which can be taken into consideration in future studies of new Mandarin loanwords. Keywords: new words, loanwords, transliterations, dialectical words Lai Tzu-yun 賴慈芸 2005 學位論文 ; thesis 154 zh-TW
