Conventionally, the pozzolanic materials used for the self-compacting concrete are fly ash and slag. They are used to replace part of the cement such that the flowing property and compacting property can reach the requirement of the self-compacting concrete. The metakolin is a very active pozzolanic material and it can enhance the early and final strengths of concrete. In this study, we study the mix proportions of self-compacting concrete using the fly ash and metakolin as the admixture. The replacement percentages of cement by the pozzolanic material are 15% and 30%. Several proportions between fly ash and metakolin are studied. From the properties of fresh concrete, we can evaluate whether the mix design can achieve the requirements of self-compacting concrete. The compressive strength development, elastic modulus and rapid chloride penetration test are performed to evaluate the properties of concrete. In addition, the scanning electronic mircroscope photos are taken to examine the microstructure of the concrete. From our results, it is found when the replacement ratio is 15% the best mix proportion of fly ash and metakolin is 4:6. When the replacement ratio is 30% the best mix proportion of fly ash and metakolin is 2:8. In addition, it is found that the concrete using pure cement as the binding material can neither satisfy the requirements of the self-compacting concrete nor have better compressive strength comparing to the concrete using pozzolanic materials.
