Description
Summary:碩士 === 東吳大學 === 社會學系 === 93 === The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between young girls’ body image and dietary behaviors under the influence of social cultural construction. The population of this study was all female students of the San Min High School in Taipei County in 2005. 192 female students aged from 12 to 18 were randomly selected as samples, and collectively answered the questionnaire in the first phase of sampling. In the second phase, each sample’s Body Material Index (BMI) was calculated, and divided into 4 groups (underweight, normal, overweight and obesity) depending on their BMI. 12 female students (3 samples in each group) whose real figures greatly differ from their expectant ones were selected for deep interviews. The major findings of this study were as following: 1.The body image and dietary behaviors of most young girls were affected by the expectation of traditional gender roles, important events of their life course, their families or peer groups, and the mass media. 2.That young girls dieted themselves was mainly caused by their over attention to their figures. 3.Both young girls in normal and overweight groups had ever used popular dietary methods, and resulted in health problems and negative effects. 4.No matter fat or thin, young girls had disorderly diet. 5.The dissatisfaction of body image of young girls resulted in their low self-esteem. Finally, this study discussed these findings and proposed some suggestions. It also addressed further research directions in the future.
