Besides chiller efficiency, high potential energy saving in air-conditioning can be found in improving the efficiency of fan systems. Significant saving in electric energy can be realized by reducing the fan motor speed when indoor cooling load decreased. The thesis conducts a study on the energy saving potential of Direct Current Brushless (DCBL) motor. High efficiency, high torque, and compactness are the characteristics of DCBL motor. It is used to control the air volume according to different cooling load. An experiment was setup with a newly developed fan coil unit. The experimental setup simulates the actual applications through controllable heating as the cooling load. The operation variation of DCBL motor applying to variable air volume under different temperature conditions were tested in the experiments. The variations of electric voltage, current, power consumption, frequency, and the wave pattern were measured and analyzed. The variations of these parameters are used to show the energy saving potential of DCBL motor fan coil. The tests were used to verify that DCBL motor can respond well to the cooling capacity of a HVAC system under normal operation. It can reduce the indoor temperature to comfort zone within short period of time and can also maintain it well. It was found that DCBL motor variable air volume system used only 30% of input power compare with that of permanent split capacitor motor at low cooling load.
