Description
Summary:碩士 === 臺南藝術學院 === 古物維護研究所 === 93 === ABSTRACT The tablet has been a long history in culture of Han people to hang on the wall as part of significant presentation of customs in the society and has always been deemed as the outward appearance of traditional architecture. Tablet is not only combined with the beauty of materials, literature, calligraphy, carving, lacquering, painting, and gilding, but also has its functional purpose to present owner’s social status, to expel evil sprit, or to pray for blessings. Some of tablets provide extremely significant historical information, such as date and the erector, and preservation of this kind of tangible cultural property is meaningful. As a part of the architecture, one tablet, however, would be taken off for restoration; it would be cleaned and repaired by conventional craftsmen, following by re-gilding, re-painting and/or re-coating. Consequently, its appearance would be new; however, its historical value was diminished completely. This essay aims at discussing the history and conservation of tablet: “A Paragon for All Generations”, which was located at grade-3 historical building Wen Kai Academy in Lukang Town. The traditional materials and techniques used in making this object would be studied in the hope of compensating for method of investigation and for the insufficiency of literary records. Findings of historical research of the tablet “A Paragon for All Generations” indicated that it was related to the restoration of Wen Wu Temple and establishment of Wen Kai Private School in 1914. For the research of producing materials, after the analytical technologies such as Cross-section analysis, SEM/EDS and FT-IR, the surface coating was appraised as the natural lacquer﹙urushi﹚, the red pigment to be synthetic cinnabar, and black urushi to be made from transparent urushi with carbon black. Then, conservation and restoration on the damage condition of this tablet was performed. The conservation treatments included surface cleaning using aqueous detergent; filling termite damaged areas with balsa strips as well as wood and carving damages using Taiwan yellow cypress; consolidating brown rot areas, surface cracks and tent areas with Paraloid B-72. In addition, the recommendation of conservation and preservation of tablet would be offered based on the tablet materials and factors deterioration. Finally, it is hoped that this paper provides valuable conservation information to the field of preservation of cultural properties and promotes the field of conservation in general.
