Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北藝術大學 === 美術學系美術創作研究所 === 93 === Content: In this dissertation called “Dwelling Place of the Mind”, the goal is to collect and summarize the following. From the perspectives of contemporary ink-wash painting artists, how are the values of their creative impulses integrated with their lifestyles? Under the principle of “Using ink-wash painting to calm their emotions for nature, living a lifestyle to reflect the values they seek to create in their work”, do contemporary ink-wash artists differ from classical, ancient artists in their pursuit of perfection as reflected in their creative style? This dissertation is divided in to five major topics of exploration. The first topic, titled “Explanation”, is tasked with the goal of explaining the intricate relationship between the “mind” and its “dwelling place” within the artist. The second topic, “Reflections on Contemporary Art”, begins with an exploration of a westernization of contemporary values of art, which is based on a concentrated focus on the “person”, and human culture, as a result, relegating “nature” to the sideline. This is contrary to the central values of ink-wash painting, therefore, ink-wash painting artists must clearly understand their own value principles, and view this westernization as a stimulation to the centuries old ink-wash style. Furthermore, when extended to realization of individual creative styles, the combination of the creative principles and western styles is perfectly suited to be expressed by the distortion principles advocated in ink-wash techniques from the late Ming dynasty. The third topic “Dwelling Place of the Mind, Creative Principles” is mainly concerned with the proverbial meaning of life, viewed through the pursuit of the ideal of a calm body and mind, an oneness between self and the world. In my works with ink-wash painting, I have experienced with an expressive technique differing from the traditional. Instead of the expression of peace, oneness, and closeness with nature, a contrasting expression of distance, chaos, wildness and eccentricity is used to present ideas of criticism, to reflect the importance of oneness, closeness with nature. Also, these works serve to help settle down the emotional upheaval created by the imbalance between Self and the Material. At the same time, adjusting a lifestyle based on values clarified by the art created. In “Creative Styles and Techniques”, the principles of material selection, modeling techniques, and the selection and usage of brushes and inks are summarized based on personal experiences and realizations. Finally, “Summary” will tie together this dissertation with a review of topics covered, and to present personal views on presentation and exhibition.
