in Elite Karate Athletes

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to (a) identify the status of elite karate athletes in sport trait anxiety, sport trait mental toughness, and athletic mental skills; (b) compare the differences among selected demographic variables on elite karate athletes’ sport trait anxiety, sport trait mental toughness, and athletic mental skills; (c) investigate the correlation among elite karate athletes’ sport trait anxiety, sport trait mental toughness, and athletic mental skills. The questionnaires were utilized for data collection including (a) Demographic Information Sheet; (b) Sport trait anxiety inventory; (c) Trait sport mental toughness inventory; (d) Athletic mental skill inventory.
Twenty-four karate athletes, who had been obtained golden medal, silver medal or bronze medal in the National University Tournament, were selected for the sample of the present study. From the survey returned, 24 were coded. Descriptive statistics, independent sample T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson Product-Moment correlation were computed for data analysis.
The results indicated that (a) the significant differences were found on sport trait anxiety by years in sport; the significant differences were found on sport trait mental toughness by gender and years in sport; the significant difference were found on overall athletic mental skill by gender, age, and years in sport; (b) sport trait anxiety and sport mental toughness were negatively correlated significantly; trait sport mental toughness and athletic mental skill were positively correlated significantly.
