The design of this study was phenomenology. The purpose sampling came from two medical centers in Taipei and one medical center in Tainan from May to November 2004. Nine subjects were selected based on the following criteria: 1. a single family having a child with cancer, 2. child’s age was from 0 to 18, 3. child was undergoing the therapy. The design of interview guide was based on the definition of family resources in the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1993). The interview took place in hospital or subjects’ houses and each subject was audio-taped between 60 to 90 minutes. Contents of the interview applied the principle of 「Bracketing」 of phenomenology during the interview in depth. The data was analyzed according to the seven-step method developed by Colaizzi (1978). The results of this study show that when a single family having a child with cancer is adapted to the period of having pressured events, the family resources they exploit which consist of six themes: 1. Amply courage of facing the sickness and revealing the bright dawn to future, 2. Capability of specialized medical treatment brings the aspiration to life, 3. Adjusting father (mother)’ conduct appropriately so that facing unpredictable future, 4. Helping children build up life that coexists with their illness, 5. Elastically utilizing economic aid to break through the straits, 6. Using elastically family operation to maintain its function. The results will thereby be able to supply a basis for clinical nursing staffs in understanding the application and demand of family resources in a single family having a child with cancer, and which accordingly further helps them to reach the optimal adaptability.
