A cross-sectional design was conducted and 410 subjects were recruited from a medical center in the central part of Taiwan. Several instruments which included height-and-weight scale, blood pressure gauge, tape- measure, Diet Self-Efficacy Scale, Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale and Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire were applied to collect the data. SPSS 10.0 for Windows and the methods of t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. The major results indicated: (1)The sample's percentage of BMI ≧ 27 was 38.5% which was 2.5 times of the Taiwan's adults. The sample's percentage of oversized waist circumference was 59.3% which was 1.7 times of the Taiwan's adults. (2) The BMI and waist circumference were negatively correlated with the Diet Self-Efficacy and the Exercise Self-Efficacy. (3)While BMI negatively correlated with the Appearance Evaluation, the Fitness Evaluation, the Fitness Orientation and the Health Orientation, there were positive correlation among BMI, the Body Weight Attention and the Body Weight Self-Evaluation. The similar results were in the waist circumference, but one more positive correlation was found between waist circumference and the Appearance Orientation. (4) The predictors of BMI were Diet Self-Efficacy, diet, Exercise Self-Efficacy, Fitness Orientation, whether living with the family, family obesity history and the psychiatric disease. These 7 variables accounted for 56.0% of total variance. The predictors of waist circumference were Diet Self-Efficacy, gender, Exercise Self-Efficacy, diet, Health Orientation, whether taking clozapine, family obesity history and Appearance Orientation. These 8 variables explained 55.8% of total variance. These findings may provide the nurses more understanding of patients' obesity and make them offer the appropriate intervention to effectively improve the obese problem for psychiatric patients.
