Under the increasingly demanding for high productivity and high quality, current method using bare eye to inspect is unable to perform the quality control task. In view of that, in this research, a prototype machine vision inspection system for flaw detection of PU-packing was developed. The system consists of three inspection stations. The first station uses one area-scan camera to scan the upper and lower surfaces of the packing sequentially. The second station uses an area-scan camera incorporating with an infrared LED backlight to scan interior of the packing. The third station uses two line scan cameras to scan the inner and outer surfaces of the ring-shaped packing simultaneously. By using radius variation checking, projection inspection, coordinate transformation, and normalized grayscale variation checking methods, seven types of defects can be successfully detected, including size flaw (deformation and bur), surface flaw (interstice, scratch, and blister), and interior flaw (air bubble and inclusion).
