They are textbooks published in Japan and marketed directly in Taiwan, textbooks published in Japan but translated into Taiwan version, and textbooks that are originally made in Taiwan. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the features of the beginner’s textbooks used in universities of southern Taiwan for Japanese conversation class. And also the proposal by Toshiko Ishida (1995:61) that there are nine requirements for the selection of textbooks. To be concerned are the edit backgrounds, compositions, contents and analysis of the textbooks. Currently, most of the beginner’s class textbooks being utilized in the universities of southern Taiwan are initially published in Japan, Taiwanese publisher then translate them directly into Chinese version. However, there is one university in southern Taiwan which utilize only textbooks edited and made in Taiwan, it is EVE University. Generally, the three textbooks are categorized into: First are textbooks which published in Japan and being utilized by universities directly. Second are textbooks which published in Japan and translated into Chinese version in Taiwan. Last are textbooks which edited and made in Taiwan. The composition of this thesis will be as follows: Chapter 1: Introduction, research motives, objectives, early research, party involved, way of research, forecasted result and so on. Chapter 2: Current state of textbooks usage, problems that might occurred, characteristics of the textbooks and so on. Chapter 3: Classification of the 3 categories of textbooks Chapter 4: Comparisons of the 3 categories based on appearance, contents, and analysis. Chapter5: Classification of the textbooks that was published in 2005and 2006. Chapter 6: Conclusion. And also the foreseen problems and perspectives of Japanese textbooks in the future.
