These architectural structures have their specific historical meanings. Thus, it is important to maintain and preserve these structures. For many years our government and private organizations have both been dedicating numerous effort toward the restoration and preservation of these monuments. According to our cultural heritage laws, only the original or similar materials can be used, in addition, only traditional techniques and methods should be utilized in the restoration process. Since the goal of the historic monuments preservation is to restore the aged architectural structures to their original appearance, and to provide a safe viewing environment for the public, the significant and difficult mission for the craftsmen to deal with is, not only to maintain the original appearance of the historical monuments, but also to ensure their structural safety. 921 Earthquake have severely damaged some of our aged architectural structures, historic buildings, and historical sites. Hence, the structural safety of our historical monuments has become a major concern and presented us with a challenging task. The traditional restoration methods are to bond and strength the wooden columns with adhesives. Once severely impaired, an aged wooden post is often replaced by a new one. The repair method cannot preserve the original features and has been controversial. This research planed to embed carbon fiber plates into damaged wooden columns and use epoxy resin to bond them together. Theoretical analysis is conducted based on experimental results to verify the feasibility of this restoration methodology. The results show that, no matter the specimens are made from imitated or real damaged wooden column, this hidden restoration methodology can effectively increase its compressive strength, provide desirable strengths dependent on real needs, and enhance its ductility. Additionally, the area needed for restoration is relatively small and cannot be easily seen, original features of the columns can be therefore preserved intact. It is clear that restoration historic wooden columns embedded with carbon fiber plates can accomplish foreseeable effects. Chen ,chang-liang 陳昶良 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 114 zh-TW
