First, the magnetic circuit models for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor is created, and then the parameters of the motor are derived. A motor design program based on Visual Basic 6.0 is developed. It is used to design the prototype motor. To meet the specification, the finite element analysis software Flux2D is employed to modify the size of the motor. To reduce the cogging torque, Taguchi method is used to robust design the parameters, such as, the open angle of magnet, the thickness of magnet, and the distance between magnets. Finally, to meet the requirements of sensorless control, several dummy slots are presented in the surfaces of stator and rotor that face the air gap.
