The study offers to cover four substantial areas: 1. Understand the discrepancy of the Chinese language proficiency between children with parents of Taiwan origin and children with one parent of foreign origin. 2. Compare and contrast the Chinese language proficiency demonstrated by children with parents of Taiwan origin and children with one parent of foreign origin in each grade. 3. Understand how the various socio-economic backgrounds of the children’s families are linked to the students’ different Chinese language proficiency levels. 4. Delve into the factors that affect the students’ Chinese language proficiency. Feasible solutions and recommendations will be made upon the findings of this research and provided for references to the government authorities for education, schools and future researchers. The subjects of this research are first-grade to sixth-grade classes in Lan-Tien Elementary School at Ilan County. The number of subject samples includes 497 students, 415 of whom have parents of Taiwan origin, 20 with mother from mainland China and 62 with parents of Southeastern Asian origin. The following data are collected for analysis: 1. Students’ gender and intelligence. 2. Fathers’ occupation and level of education. 3. The Chinese language proficiency test score. These data are processed by statistical devices such as taking the average, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA and multiple stepwise regression analysis. The research findings based upon the statistical analysis are summarized as follows: 1. Students of different genders differ in Chinese language proficiency. 2. Students with different intelligence differ in Chinese language proficiency. 3. Students of fathers with different occupations differ in Chinese language proficiency. 4. Students of fathers with different levels of education do not differ significantly in their Chinese language proficiency level. 5. Children with mothers of different origins do not differ significantly in their Chinese language proficiency level. 6. Factors including intelligence, gender and father’s occupation effectively predict the students’ score on the Chinese language proficiency test. Based on these findings, the research makes recommendations about Chinese language learning that is specifically designed for children with parents of foreign origin. The competent education-related authorities, schools and future researchers may make reference to these findings for future development of similar subjects.
