Its purpose was to explore experiences of feelings of powerlessness among the main caregivers of rehospitalized schizophrenia patients, and to identify factors that have a correlation with the production of such feelings. Interviews with seven participants were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed in accordance with Colaizzi’s (1976) steps for analysis of phenomenological research data. In the interests of rigor, Sandelowski’s (1986) four criteria ―credibility, fittingness, auditability, and confirmability ―were adopted as measures of the study’s validity. The results showed five main concepts to be associated with caregivers’ experiences of feelings of powerlessness:(1)negative emotional reactions;(2)conflicting feelings of pain;(3)loneliness;(4)physical and emotional torment;(5)bewilderment because of lack of understanding of the disease. Correlating factors causing the sense of powerlessness largely fell into four categories:(1)limitations in relation to age and physical condition;(2)the effects of one’s psychological state;(3)lack of social resources ;and(4)others. These findings may assist health care providers by raising their understanding of both the pshychological processes involved in feelings of powerlessness experienced by caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and of the correlated factors. In order to improve the quality of nursing care, nurses need not only to care for patients, but also to concern themselves with the caregivers, providing timely assistance and support, and improving their intrinsic capability. 蕭淑貞 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 0 zh-TW
