The measurement of professional commitment is helpful for job retaining intention of nursing staffs. In the past, most of the studies of professional commitment measurement are based on demographic characteristics and there are fewer studies subject to personal concept and workplace organizational environments. Since individual’s behavior maybe influenced by the degree of self-reception toward internal and external environments. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships among organization-based self-esteem, perceived support, and professional commitment among psychiatric nurses. A total of three hundred and thirty questionnaires were issued to the nurses with effective ninety-one copies returned from six general hospitals and with effective one hundred sixty two copies returned from five psychiatric hospitals. The research finds positive correlation among organization-based self-esteem, perceived support, and professional commitment. The predictors of professional commitment are ranked to organization-based self-esteem, perceived supervisor support, job interests and family support. perceived supervisor support moderator the relationship between organization-based self-esteem and professional commitment. There are significant differences between new coming nurses and current personnel in organization-based self-esteem, perceived organizational support; on the other hand, there are no significant differences in perceived supervisor support and professional commitment. According to the results of this study, psychiatric nurses are suggested to enhance organization-based self-esteem and the degree of perceived supervisor support in order to improve professional commitment for continuing nursing career.
