International trade takes up a very high percentage of our economic activities which fully relies on sea and air transportation. As a result, the government paid special emphasizes to the infrastructures constructions of transportation facilities. In recent years, technology development has contributed to the small-sized, high-value products. Relatively higher demand for service standards and for higher handling efficiency in international transportation is required. Air cargo transportation, in particular, meets the requirement of the high standards and therefore the high value products require air cargo transportation more than ever. Taiwan enjoys a significant central geographic location which is suitable for the development of air transportation center in the Asia Pacific region. Our government, based on the demand of our economic development, has already set up the policy to build ourselves as the air transportation center in the Asia Pacific region. A number of implementation plans have been made and have moved forward accordingly. In the entire process of air cargo transportation, air cargo terminal is playing the key role with regard to efficiency. The development of air cargo terminal and its external competition environment are also playing the key roles. Recently new airports in the neighboring countries have been built in the Asia Pacific region, and existing airports have also been expanded with improved facilities and capacities. In addition, a part of our manufacturing industry has moved to other areas. All these factors have made the growth of our air cargo getting slower while the competition among airports getting keener. In the highly competitive environment, air cargo terminals are endeavoring to utilize marketing activities, to cut costs and to further enhance handling efficiency as well as service standards in order to strengthen our continuous competitive edge. Moreover, how to grab the opportunities in the external environment and how to avoid threat, as well as how to improve the service standards of air cargo terminal so as to reach our perpetual business goal, have become the subject of the management in the air cargo industry. The existing studies are mostly focused on internal environment or improvement. This dissertation contains research of external competition environment through document review, overall industrial analysis, Porter’s Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Boston Consulting Group’s Growth-Share Matrix Model as well as first-hand interviews, in the hope to summarize the critical elements of the opportunities and threats analysis in the external environment of Taipei CKS International Airport cargo terminal.
