The collecting experiments were conducted from June to October in 2004 by collecting seeds from Chiayi county. The growth analyses were then conducted at the greenhouse of Department of Agronomy in Chiayi University by using seeds collected from Chiayi city, Dapu and Dongshih. The results were summarized as follows: (1)As for the means and CV values of plant characters and the correlations between characters of these E. hirta L. populations from Chiayi county, the results indicated the characters of the phenotypes were significantly different among those populations from Chiayi county. As for the CV values, the branch number of main stem in Meishan area was the highest, as high as 49 % and the length of inflorescene in Dapu was the lowest, as low as 0.02 %. The significant tests of differences showed if the sampling locations were divided into 50 meters below, 50 ~ 100 meters and higher than 100 meters above sea level, the plant heights and node numbers of main stems in these three areas had no significant differences, while the other 8 characters were significantly different. In addition, the correlation between characters of these E. hirta L. populations from Chiayi county varied from area to area. (2)Different temperatures and light or dark treatments were used to investigate the germination characters of E. hirta L. Analyses of variances showed the germination percentage and speed of germination were highly significantly different in the sampling areas both under light or dark treatments, while the mean days of germination was significantly different only in dark treatment. In the aspect of temperature effect, the mean days of germination and speed of germination were highly significantly different both in light and dark treatments, while the germination percentage was significantly different. As for the significant tests of differences in sampling areas, the germination percentage of Chiayi city in the light treatment was the best, as high as 46 %, while the mean days of germination in the dark treatment of Chiayi city was the lowest, as low as 3.53 days. Speed of germination of Chiayi city was the best both in the light and dark treatments. The significant tests of differences in temperature treatments, the germination percentage reached the highest, as high as 55.11 % in 25/20 ℃, while the mean days of germination and speed of germination were the best in 30/25 ℃, which were 2.79 and 9.57 days respectively. (3)Seeds collected from Chiayi city, Dapu, Dongshih were used to conduct growth analyses to compare the growth differences of plant characters of E. hirta L. The results indicated, among 8 investigated characters, the plant height, fresh weight and dry weight in three areas mentioned above were significantly different and those seeds sampling from Chiayi city were the best, the plant height was 38.6 cm, the fresh weight was 2.54 g and dry weight was 0.78 g, while the other 5 characters revealed no significant differences.
