Users also require more delicate and higher quality of services. For the sake of pursuing the convenience of the ubiquity, network changes from the wired link to the wireless access and the heterogeneity lifts up in the home network gradually. The OSGi digital home gateway system not only handles the integration of the heterogeneous home network protocols but also coordinates information sharing and services to home users entertained by on-line services, home security, multimedia entertainment, home automation, data exchange and data storage. Modern home network applications, especially for real time services, require a quality guaranteed service, namely Quality of Service (QoS) in a limited home network resource. In the wired and wireless heterogeneous home network, it has different kinds of QoS concerns. For example, we concern more about the bit error rate, retransmissions, and packet loss rate in the wireless network, which are not sensitive in the wired network. Besides, the QoS control parameters are not the same in different kinds of applications. For example, the web phones concern the jitter ratio and the end-to-end delay, the on-line video concern more about the packet loss ratio which may influence the definition. In our experiment, we refer the available UPnP QoS specification version 1.0 to design an adaptive QoS management mechanism, which is based on the RMD (Resource Management in DiffServ) architecture, for applications in the OSGi Home Gateway in the future. By the adaptive QoS management scheme, we monitor the real time network traffic and control the bandwidth to keep the quality for each applications in network congestion. According to the heterogeneous QoS parameters, we further perform an adjustment and controlling to achieve the QoS in the home network. In the simulation results, we can find that after we build the QoS management mechanism into the RMD, total jitter, latency, and packet loss ratio has been decreased 0.1391 milliseconds, 0.0066 seconds, and 5.43% respectively. To address different kinds of real-time applications, we decrease 4.53% packet loss ratio and increase 1.2% throughput for the high definition video streaming, decrease 1.89% packet loss ratio for standard definition video streaming, and for the VoIP (Voice over IP) we also decrease the jitter and latency to 0.0407 milliseconds and 0.0209 seconds respectively.
