The Effects of Picture Books about Gender Study Group on Gender Role Attitude and Self-Concept for Children

碩士 === 國立花蓮師範學院 === 輔導碩士班 === 94 === The purpose of the study was to explore group effects on gender role attitude and self-concept by a serial curriculum of picture books about gender for children. The quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Participants were sixty five third grade students of elementary school in Nanto County. One class with thirty three students (19 boys and 14 girls) was assigned to treatment group and the other class with thirty two students (19 boys and 13 girls) was assigned to control group. The experimental group discussed gender issues by picture books twice a week, each lasted 75 minutes (12 times in all), while the control group did not. Sex Role Attitude Scale and Self-Concept Scale were administered to groups of participants for pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using the analysis of covariance. In addition to the obtain quantifying data, the researcher analyzed the counseling effects of the treatment group according to their feedbacks, interviewing records, observing records and sound video records data. The results indicated that picture books about gender study group could reduce the stereotype of gender role and promote participants’ self-concept. According to qualitative data, it also showed that the most of the members determined the choices of career, toys and games to considered the individual’s ability or interest not gender; they would respect the same and the other gender with different characteristics, confirm and love themselves, more willing to share household, get along with their families and friends more happily than before. Based on the conclusions above, suggested those teachers or researchers who takes great interest in the issue could focus on the enforcement of gender education, study group and further studies. Firstly, the authorities should enforce gender education as soon as possible. Secondly, study group could be an affective and effective agent for conveying the positive gender concepts; moreover, teachers can also use picture books as helpful tools to demonstrate the notion of gender. Third, the further studies could explore the issues of gender via different variations (parents’ attitudes towards education, the level of literacy of the researched), different targets, the ways of evaluations of both parents and teachers.
