Design codes used to provide some reference values for the friction coefficient of rubber pads sliding against steel plates, which were found unsafe as compared to the results from recent tests based on quasi-static cyclic loads. The study here adopts dynamic load tests on a series of rubber pads, in addition to the conventional static load tests. The input waves from a light shaker and motions of the pad-weight assembly are recorded and then sent to a numerical model simulation code written for analyzing mass-spring dynamic models. The friction coefficients are identified (back-calculated) from the simulations. For the studied samples where the rubber sliding against the steel plate, the test results confirm that the code values are on the low side. The results indicate normal force on rubbers has an influence on the friction coefficient during the sliding motions.
