The purpose of speech coding is to store and transmit digitized speech
signal. This paper studies some coding algorithms for real-time network
phone software. It studies quantitatively some important parameters which
affect the speech quality. Speak-Freely, a PC-to-PC internet phone software,
was originally written by John Walker in 1991. In 1997, John walker agreed
to let Brian C. Wiles officially take over the project. With the spirit
of Open Source SoftwareTM, Wiles licensed this program under the GNU
(General Public License). This thesis studies some speech coding
technologies used in Speak-Freely. We modify some subroutines for the
purpose of observing how the studied coding methods work. From the results
of the thesis, we gain some hints to improve the coding methods.
