Subjects for this study are 1030 public junior high school students in Kaohsiung city, during the academic year 2005. This study was conducted by literature review analysis and survey study. “Parenting Style Scale” and “Life Adjustment Scale for Junior High School Students” are employed as the research tools. The findings and conclusions of this study are summarized below. 1.Sample analysis of the surveyed junior high school students in Kaohsiung city (1)In terms of sexual ratio, females have a higher ratio among the total students surveyed. In terms of birth order, students who are the eldest or the youngest sons have a higher ratio, of more than 35%. (2)In terms of families’ socioeconomic status, the ratio for families with middle-to-low socioeconomic status is 40.6%, the highest ratio among all of them. The combined ratio for families with middle and middle-to-low socioeconomic statuses is 73.6%. 2.Parenting styles for junior high school students in Kaohsiung city (1)Most of the parents use the neglecting parenting style with their children, while the second most adopted style by parents is the authoritative parenting style. (2)Parenting style doesn’t vary according to the sex and birth order of junior high school students. (3)In terms of families’ socioeconomic status, the parenting styles for junior high school students vary according to different levels of socioeconomic status. Families with higher socioeconomic statuses would probably adopt the authoritative parenting style, while most families with middle-to-low and low socioeconomic statuses would adopt the neglecting parenting style. 3.The life adjustments of junior high school students in Kaohsiung city (1)Generally speaking, the life adjustments of junior high school students in each aspect do not show a lot of variations. Their life adjustments are considered to be fair. (2)There is a sexual difference regarding school life adjustment. Female students exhibit better life adjustment than do male students. However, there is no sexual difference in terms of individual adjustment, family adjustment or the adjustment in overall aspects. (3)Individual adjustment, family adjustment and the adjustment in overall aspects do not vary according to different birth orders. (4)Junior high school students’ life adjustments vary with different socioeconomic status, so they show different degrees of individual adjustment, family adjustment and the overall adjustment. Students from families with low socioeconomic status would have lower life adjustment capability. However, school adjustment does not vary according to different socioeconomic status. 4.The correlation and differences between parenting styles and the life adjustments of junior high school students in Kaohsiung city (1)Junior high school students treated with authoritative parenting style present the best life adjustment in all aspects. (2)Junior high school students treated with neglecting parenting style present the worst life adjustment. Based on the findings and conclusions of this study, several recommend- dations are presented as references for the Education Bureau, junior high school education, parent-child interaction and future research. Abstract

3.The life adjustments of junior high school students in Kaohsiung city
